Here at Atlanta Based Systems (ABS), we’re all about solving unique challenges with innovative technology—like streamlining dental lab operations with our Evolution software. So, when we heard about a dental story that’s both heartwarming and groundbreaking, we couldn’t resist sharing it with our community! On April 17, 2025, Chester Zoo in the UK made headlines with a world-first dental procedure on a sloth named Rico, proving that innovation in dentistry isn’t just for humans—or dental labs.
A Toothache at Sloth Speed
Rico, a 25-year-old two-toed sloth, had been dealing with a toothache that left his keepers concerned. They noticed swelling on the sides of his face, and after a series of health checks, including a CT scan, the diagnosis was clear: two root abscesses. Sloths, with their specialized molars designed for a diet of tough leaves, have teeth very different from humans, making dental work a real challenge. But Rico was in good hands—or paws—with the team at Chester Zoo.
A Pioneering Procedure
In a three-hour surgery, Chester Zoo’s vets teamed up with dental experts from Newcastle University to perform what’s believed to be the first-ever endodontic treatment on a sloth. The procedure, called an apicectomy, involved removing the infected root tips of Rico’s molars and sealing them with special cement—a technique usually reserved for humans. Unlike a typical root canal, the team accessed the teeth through the bottom of Rico’s jaw, navigating his unique anatomy with precision.
Dentist Fiona Beddis, who led the procedure, called it a “step into the unknown” but a “great privilege” to treat such a rare animal. She even shared a personal connection, noting she’d had the same surgery as a teenager, which inspired her career in dentistry. Dave Edwards from Newcastle University’s School of Dental Sciences added, “It was very challenging working on a sloth due to their unique anatomy, but also a very rewarding experience.”
Rico’s Road to Recovery
Post-surgery, Rico has been a model patient—at his own leisurely pace, of course! His keeper, Brittany Williams, shared a chuckle about working at “sloth speed,” noting that Rico has been trained to climb down for health checks using treats like cooked parsnips and corn kernels. Recent X-rays confirm the abscesses haven’t returned, and Rico’s filling is still in place, meaning he’s back to enjoying his leafy snacks with his companion, Tina, in the zoo’s jaguar house.
Here’s a glimpse of Rico during one of his post-surgery X-rays, willingly clambering into position for the team:
Why This Matters
Rico’s story isn’t just adorable—it’s a testament to how collaboration and innovation can solve even the most unusual challenges. Two-toed sloths like Rico, native to South America, face threats like habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade. Chester Zoo’s conservation breeding program, which Rico is part of, helps safeguard the species, and this surgery ensures he can live a healthy, happy life while contributing to those efforts.
At ABS, we see parallels in our own work. Just as Chester Zoo and Newcastle University came together to tackle Rico’s toothache, our Evolution software brings dental labs the tools they need to overcome operational hurdles—streamlining workflows, reducing errors, and saving time. Whether it’s a sloth’s smile or a dental lab’s efficiency, the right technology makes all the difference.
